Sunday Service 009: Oded Nir

Fresh from releasing his slick Rooftop Conversations long player, Oded Nir stops by with his sultry contribution to our Sunday Service mix series. The Waveform Transmitter’s Ste Knight presents a mix laden with blissed-out lounge vibes for your post-club chill session.

Back in 2010, Amsterdam’s Oded Nir released his debut album, Midnight Snacker, to critical acclaim – an acclaim that was well justified, as the Dutch multi-instrumentalist and producer gave us a timeless, trip-hop tinged electronica LP that still sounds fresh nine years down the line.

April 26th saw Nir return to Suntree Records with his second album; Rooftop Conversations. The album pulls together infectious jazz grooves, deep house licks, and a heavy dose of funk, and features collaboration with some serious names, including Dutch trumpet impresario, Saskia Laroo, who lends her deft brass skills to the opening number, US vocalist Chappell on Again & Again, and MC King Dred James serves up some serious toast on Power of the Hair.

Speaking of his latest work, Oded says “With Rooftop Conversations, it was important in my eyes to blend all my current musical styles into one album and to experiment and create a body of work that represents me as a musician today. Where ‘Midnight Snacker’ was more Trip Hop, dark and melancholic, ‘Rooftop Conversations’ comes with a happier vibe with lots of funk to feel good.”

Listening to the album, this rings true – it is packed with those moments, where the hairs on the back of your neck bristle, giving your central nervous system that all-important little tweak, firing off the dopemine for plenty of smile-friendly sonics. Nir showcases his insrumental abilities throughout the record’s nine tracks, with the likes of TLV Blues and Double Bass giving the producer a chance to take the limelight all for himself, and deservedly so.
