The mysterious Nika Moroz makes a return with her latest EP, Come to Your Senses, which is out next week on Soundtracking the Void. The Waveform Transmitter’s Ste Knight has a full EP AND video premiere for you to enjoy.
There is a lot to be said for remaining enigmatic when producing and releasing music; it allows the compositions to really convey their message without any pretense or expectation. This is certainly the case with Nika Moroz. The producer has (we think) only seen light of day once, previously, and that was in December 2018 when she teamed up with Lo-Five on the brilliant Mates album that dropped on the Emotion Wave imprint.
Nika‘s family moved from their home in Salihorsk, Belarus, back in 2015, and Nika has found herself in Liverpool’s North End. Having grown up playing guitar and flute, it has seemed like a natural progression for the producer to take up computer music. Speaking of her productions, Moroz states that she is “trying to find peace and stay positive in the face of personal struggles.” While she misses her home, the sense of longing translates into some beautiful electronica, which is as relevant to the dancefloor as it is to home-listening.
The EP package features Moroz‘ original mix of the track, alongside two remixes; one from Soundtracking the Void top-bod Thomas Ragsdale, and one from acid purveyor, Jozef K, so this is a real treat from all three producers. The opening track, Nika‘s original version of Come to Your Senses, has all the hallmarks of a classic 90’s UK techno production. Deft padwork creates a miasma around the solid 4/4 kick, giving the opening bars a surreal, dreamlike quality. This illusion is shattered as a killer electro break comes into play at the midpoint, for a hefty dose of funk to see us out.
Thomas Ragsdale‘s remix immediately grabs onto the housey elements of the track to deliver an interpretation that is not light on the Balearic tones. This is a lovely remix from the Soundtracking the Void label head, which would work nicely in a variety of house sets as we hit peak time, especially thanks to the euphorically arpeggiating synth and, cliche as it may sound, the uplifting ‘hands in the air’ feel that the track instils. Bodzin must be shitting himself.
The second remix continues with the housey vibes, courtesy of Jozef K. We know from personal experience that Jozef is a Chicago house afficionado, and his re-rub fattens out the kick, giving this version a definite warehouse friendly vibe, especially with that oh-so-growling bassline and acid flecks. This is significantly darker than the other two tracks, until we hit peak-lysergic and that stunning 303 comes singing in for the second half of the track. Glorious.
This is an exciting and invigorating release which, thanks to the producer’s relative anonymity and recent appearance on the scene, really lets the music speak for it. Good job, too, because these productions are talking complete sense. We look forward, with baited breath, to what Nika Moroz has in store for us next.
