Hamburg DJ and producer, Helena Hauff, is set to release her latest album, ‘Qualm’ in August, via the Ninja Tune imprint. The Waveform Transmitter’s Ste Knight has the details on the artist’s 12-track long-player.
Helena Hauff is fast becoming an artist whose name is synonymous with the electro sound. Her sets often feature a raft of tracks that have their roots in the genre, including her own productions, not surprising given that Hauff began her DJ career in Hamburg’s Golden Pudel nightclub, quickly garnering attention thanks to the minimal electro vibes present throughout her sets.
August 3rd sees Hauff dropping Qualm, a twelve-track album that explores the producer’s love for all things stripped-back. Ninja Tune have picked up the release, having signed her for her 2015 LP, Discreet Desires. Good news, though, you don’t have to wait until August to sample the tracks from the album, as two have been released by the label to tease you into grabbing your copy. having listened to them, we can’t wait to hear the finished product.
Qualm is a beatless excursion that follows the electro tropes we have come to recognise as part of the genre’s sound. Swirling synths create a miasma of sound that envelopes the listener, offering a retro-futuristic soundscape. It acts as an introduction to the next track on the album, No Qualms, which contains an almost identical synth pattern, alongside classic electro percussion, which somehow gives the track a slightly sinister edge. A perfect example of the electro sound.
