Weaving between urban, tech and house, this November sees the release of the brand-new Permission series with the Awoken EP by London’s Kahniche, launched on his own new, exciting Shadow Stance label. The four tracks of bouncing, garage grooves blended with techy arpeggios and soulful melodies creatively bring together echoes of the old-school with ramped-up, modern twists

His dad was a pro singer which left Kahniche with little choice but to have frequencies running through his veins. Setting off on his own musical journey early in life and finding sequencers, samplers and sound modules it wasn’t long before the Sound on Sound magazines and experimentation took him to his first set of decks and an interest in DJing.

Kahniche’s first love was Jungle, inspired by the likes of Ray Keith, Hype and DJ Zinc before developing a taste for UK Garage. After taking a couple of years off Kahniche has returned to draw a new map of the genre constellations of garage, techno and house. Playing with the light and dark, old and new, now we get to hear the incredible results.

The track Joy does exactly what it says on the tin, with a soulful vocal amidst an urban garage, house feel, techy arpeggios shower across the palette whilst the sound of synths and pianos create a colourful blend that are further heightened by vocal chants that pierce the feel-good five minutes with a house like soul.

Deeper delves into a more electro feel initially, arpeggiating synths with a moody vocal that spills over into a minimal garage tune that promises to “take you where you wanna go – deeper”.

As the EP continues we are met with You, another golden nugget of garage infused, tech house sounds, with a boss arpeggiator line, snappy garage snares and a swinging bass melody, the synths do a great job of hovering above and among the structured melee of styles and sounds that combine to create an almost eerie party atmosphere.

Title track Awoken is the jewel in the crown, a defined tech house banger, top, snappy, sharp drums bring us in, then.. boom! in comes the old school rave feel that instantly grapples with your neck, shoulders and wrists then waves them all around for you, interjected with several sections, drops and a melody line that doesn’t get old. We’ve been lucky enough to be treated to an exclusive world-premiere of Awoken, so get your amps fiddled up to 11, this one is fire! You can check it out at the bottom of the page.

Overall, a bloody good EP that has enough well combined variety to appeal to a smorgasbord of music fans.

“The idea behind the Shadow Stance label is about being grounded and connected, working quietly in the shadows to gain a position of strength (a stance) in the art I love. With this focus I’ve created the ‘Permission Series’ designed to provide a space where I can experiment with both genre and sound freely.”Kahniche
