Warriors of the Dystotheque are back with their latest single, produced in collaboration with Pop Will Eat Itself. The Waveform Transmitter’s Ste Knight presents an exclusive premiere of the Kalahara remix of We’re Taking Control.
You will undoubtedly remember that we featured WOTD not long after we launched, a few months back. They kindly provided us with a stunning gloomtronica mix as a contribution to our Waveform Mix Series, and we were blown away by the fact that, at the time, the four-piece had never spent any time in the same room together (geographical separation saw to this).
Well, they’re back with a bang with their new single, We’re Taking Control, which is a collaboration with seminal industrial alt-rockers, Pop Will Eat Itself. PWEI are well known for causing sonic disturbances from the late eighties onward, with their highest charting song Get the Girl! Kill the Baddies! hitting number nine in the singles rundown.
The track We’re Taking Control is an angsty number (which is no surprise considering PWEI were involved) with all manner of power electronics and lush swells ebbing and flowing around the repeated vocals, as a nice little acid melody drops in and out of the mix. Stuttering, glitch effects complete the track; truly a message that we need to rise up and grab our own future by the hands, lest it be left in the hands of the irresponsible few that seek to position themselves above all others.
The Kalahara remix takes the glitches and burbles from the original track and builds on those, adding a pervasive feel to the track. The vocals are all but dropped out of the track to allow the other elements to take centre stage. This serves to add to the dystopian message contained within the track.
Kalahara, are Lydia Kaye and Lex Shellard. After a guest vocal from Lydia on a previous project of Lex’s the duo realised they both had a desire to create music on a deeper level that finally connects the dots and lets them express what they have always wanted to say.
By day Lex makes film trailer music for the likes of Marvel, Universal, and Sony and is currently working with New Order on sound design for their forthcoming series of shows at Manchester International Festival. Lydia is a singer-songwriter, writing toplines and songs for modern producer’s like Howson’s Groove to legends like Alison Moyet.
The single is backed up by further remixes from Justin Robertson, and a b-side, Thou Shalt Not Follow. It is due for public release on June 2nd, with an exclusive Beatport release on May 19th. In the meantime, check out the awesome Kalahara remix, exclusive to The Waveform Transmitter.
